Mrs. Betty Raye Austin Alfred, age 77, a resident of Cary, died Sunday, June 12, 2016 at her home.

Memorial services will be Thursday, June 30, at 11:00 AM at Campbell’s Creek United Methodist Church and will be conducted by J. David Wiseman and Todd McMillen. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Alfred was born in Beaufort County on December 12, 1938 to the late Marvin and Julia Mae Edwards Austin. On July 27, 1958 she married Frederick Roberts Alfred who survives. She was a 1958 graduate of Aurora High School and attended East Carolina Teachers College. She retired as office manager for the Cary Presbyterian Church. She always held a special place in her heart for “the river;” the tiny community of Jarvis Landing on the Pamlico River. She especially loved sitting on the pier with family and friends, enjoying the views of Indian Island and the Pamlico Sound, boating, and family fish frys.

Survivors include her husband, Frederick Alfred of the home, two daughters, Betty Mackinson and husband Larry of Charlotte, NC, Marta Whichard and husband Lindsay of Nashville, NC, one son, Fred Alfred Jr. and wife Julie of Huntersville, NC, five grandchildren, India Mackinson, Ivy Mackinson, Ella Mackinson, Lora Alfred and Kylie Brown, and three sisters, June Griffin of Cherry Grove, SC, Julia Beth Paul of Blounts Creek and Fran Duarte of Raleigh, NC.
