From Beaufort-Hyde Community Foundation

The Beaufort-Hyde Community Foundation announces the establishment of the Reid Sasnett Memorial Scholarship in Washington, according to Natalie Jenkins Peel, regional director for the northeast.

According to his parents, Amy and Paul Sasnett, the scholarship was created in part to help Reid’s memory live on.

“This scholarship creates the opportunity for Reid’s memory to live in perpetuity and to afford students the opportunity to continue their education in a field that is as meaningful to them as it would have been to Reid,” Amy Sasnett said. “He loved his family, friends, farming, shooting, volunteering with the fire department, his truck and, of course, sunsets.”

His friends described Reid as a “really good guy, helpful and always smiling.”

Sasnett said that each person has a personal story. “Our story is the special everlasting bond that he created within his family…the tie that binds,” she said.

The scholarship fund will award its first scholarship in 2017 to a graduating senior at Pungo Christian Academy, the year that Reid was expected to graduate. Eligible applicants will include: graduating seniors of Pungo Christian Academy in Belhaven and graduating seniors from any Beaufort County high school who have been admitted for enrollment in a qualifying institution to pursue a degree, certificate or training in a program that prepares them for gainful employment in a recognized occupation.

Individuals most likely to be selected to receive a scholarship are those who demonstrate the following characteristics: good character, leadership, commitment to serving the community and a love for agriculture, wildlife and the outdoors. Preference may be given to students from Pungo Christian Academy and to students who are or have served as volunteer firefighters.

Complete details about the award and application deadlines will be announced early in 2017.
