First responders turned out Sunday morning for Bunyan Volunteer Fire Department’s first annual 9/11 Memorial Walk to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Any member of the fire department was invited to attend as firefighters made their way across 2.5 miles in full uniform. The distance was equivalent to 110 flights of stairs, which is the same number of flights in one of the World Trade Center towers. The walk also began at 8:50 a.m. — the exact arrival time of the first New York fire official that day, Battalion Chief Joseph Pfiefer. Bunyan firefighters hope to make this an annual event, honoring the 343 firefighters who gave their lives on Sept. 11.
