Mrs. Elsie Roper Spencer, age 90, a resident of East Second Street, Washington, died Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, September 29, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Washington, conducted by Rev. Ken Hall. Burial will follow in Amity United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Spencer was born in Engelhard, N.C. on June 28, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Henry Lee Roper and Rosalie Burrus Roper. She was a retired proofreader/receptionist with the Washington Daily News. Mrs. Spencer was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

In September 1948, she married Thomas Ernest Spencer, who preceded her in death August 28, 1984.

Mrs. Spencer is survived by her son, Thomas Ernest Spencer Jr. of the home; brother, Henry Lee Roper Jr. and wife, Susan of Bristol, TN; three sisters, Mary Davis of Arden, N.C., Julianna Forbes and husband, Wildon of Elizabeth City, N.C., Jacquelyn Sawyer and husband, John of Webster, MA and special friend, Emily Ann Lobos of Chapel Hill, N.C.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by a brother, William Lawrence Roper and two sisters, Sarah Louise Roper and Ellen Hamlett.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington.
