Phillip “Phil” Newberry

Mr. Phillip “Phil” Thorne Newberry, age 66, a resident of 188 Loop Rd. # 1, Pantego, died Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Duke Medical Center in Durham.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at Union Grove Church of Christ of Pantego, officiated by Stanley Allen. Burial will follow in the Steiner Family Cemetery of the Grassy Ridge community of Pantego.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Latham, Ricky Boyd, Rodney Glass, Kenneth Allen, Jay Allen, Casey Bell, Richard Steiner and Stetson Mann. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Boyd, Norman Allen, John McAden, Wade Hubers, Bill Lawrence, Billy Allen, Buster Manning, Tommy Gray, Vernon Bell, Ellis Gibbs, Buddy Latham, Jack Dunbar, Tony Harris, Eddie Bryant Harris, Eddie Boyd, Hallas Boyd, Justin Allen and Wes Hershey.

The family received friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Union Grove Church of Christ.

Mr. Phil was born in Beaufort County on September 14, 1950, son of the late Preston Thorne Newberry and Velna Sanders Newberry who survives. He was a graduate of Pantego High School. On April 27, 2002 he married the former Lina Jane Steiner who survives. Phil was a master welder and mechanic. If it could be broken, Phil could fix it. His passion was hunting; he loved spending time in the woods and looked forward to hunting season every year. Phil was a professional storyteller and loved the art of conversation over a hot cup of coffee, which conceived the Pungo Coffee Shop. He was a member of Bullseye Hunting Club, and he attended Trinity Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving along with his wife Lina of the home and mother Velna of Pinetown are five children: Michael Scott Newberry of Arkansas, Fallon Jane Newberry, Hailee Ann Newberry, Nicholas Thorne Newberry and Lindsey Jo Newberry, all of the home and a sister: Linda Faye Cutler and her husband Marshall of Pantego.
