Byron Edward Martin, age 92, a resident of 600 Northwood Road, Washington, NC, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, at Vidant Beaufort Hospital.

Funeral services will begin with a family tribute at 10:45 am (everyone is welcome) Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at Mother of Mercy Catholic Church followed by Mass conducted by Father Brendan Buckler.

Byron was born on Feb. 25, 1924 in Lyons, Illinois to the late John and Emma (Krueger) Martin. On Jan. 22, 1949, he married Dorothy Patricia (Pat) Mers. He was a 1931 graduate of Lyons Township High School and then enrolled at Valparaiso University. During his time at Valpo he enlisted in the United States Navy. The Navy sent him to Notre Dame University where he attended midshipman school and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He retired as a Chemical Engineer in 1986 after 40 years of service with Best Foods Company (Unilever). Byron was a member of Mother of Mercy Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Pat Martin, two daughters, Linda Gomolka and husband Gerry of Jacksonville, Florida, Liz Richards and husband Ron of Wauconda, Illinois, two grandchildren, Jon Gomolka and Katie Richards. Byron was preceded in death by two grandsons, Kyle Martin Gomolka and Ryan Martin Gomolka.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington.
