Marion Worthy

Marion Worthy, of Washington, North Carolina, passed away and went to be with her Lord and Savior December 2, 2016. Her parents were Ford S. and Pauline Marion Worthy. She was born and raised in Washington, attended public schools and graduated from Washington High School in the class of 1944. Ms. Worthy attended Duke University for two years after which she taught at Chocowinity for a year. In 1947 she married Jennings B. Freeman who predeceased her in 2014.

Ms. Worthy received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1962 and a Master of Arts in Education degree in 1968 from East Carolina University. During her career, she taught at the Pamlico Community School, the public school system, and served as a social worker in the Adult Services Unit of the Beaufort County Department of Social Services. She retired in 1991.

Ms. Worthy was active in the community all her life. She was especially devoted to the First Presbyterian Church. She was active in the O. Henry Book Club and the Washington Park Garden Club. She loved sitting on her porch overlooking the Pamlico River.

Surviving Ms. Worthy are her sons, Ford Worthy Freeman and J. Bryan Freeman Jr., both of Washington, and a brother, Ford Worthy Jr. of Raleigh. Her son, Paul Marion Freeman, died in 2014.

There will be a graveside service at Oakdale Cemetery on Monday, December 5, 2016 at 2 PM. The family will receive friends at the home, 100 Riverside Drive, on Sunday, December 4, 2016 between 2:00 and 4:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to send a memorial are requested to send contributions to the Town of Washington Park, PO Box 632, Washington, NC 27889 for the planting of live oaks.
