Sinujae McNeil, a fifth-grade art student in Mrs. Moore’s class at John Small Elementary School is the winner of the 2016 Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort Country Christmas card contest. The card features an owl and words “NOEL” spelling out the phrase, “Now is the time to Open your mind Enrich with Literacy.” When asked why he chose the owl, he said it’s because the owl is wise. The winning card will be made into acknowledgement cards and mailed to recipients who make a donation to the organization in honor of friends and/or family. Donations need to be received before Dec. 16 at the office of Literacy Volunteers at 1385 John Small Ave., Washington, N.C. 27889. The organization is a nonprofit providing free tutoring to legal residents of Beaufort County in reading, writing and math. Merry Christmas! Pictured are Sinujae and his teacher with the card he created.
