The Down East Seniors Club held their Dec. 14 meeting at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. President Ed Hamrick led the meeting. Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America” and Ed Bolen gave the invocation. Dick Paul provided humor.
Hamrick introduced new member Gary Brinn.
Stewart Rumley reminded the club of the Dec. 21 Christmas party at 6 p.m. at The Ne’er Do Well restaurant. This will replace the regular meeting next week.
Hamrick introduced Jimmy Mobley as the speaker. Mobley has been mayor of the Town of Chocowinity for 20 years. Eight hundred, forty-one residents live within the town limits. He told of his involvement early in his term of having the medical/dental center established there. The town has recently completed an upgrade to their sewer system. The town keeps financial records for the fire department and the EMS department which has 26 full-time employees. Mobley is currently working along with the county in negotiations with two companies that are interested in locating in the industrial park, which is within the town’s extra territorial jurisdiction.
Bill Cheshire won the 50/50 drawing.
