Dalton R. Gurganus

Mr. Dalton Ray Gurganus, age 82, a resident of 2023 Old Bath Highway, Washington, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2017.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, at Asbury United Methodist Church and will be conducted by Rev. Claire Clyburn and Rev. Jim Reed. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Johnny Woolard, Eddie Gurganus, Tommy Chandler, Jim Smith, Tyler Watkins and Trey Watkins will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Gurganus was born in Pitt County on Sept. 24, 1934, to the late Dave and Carrie Victoria Dixon Gurganus. He worked for Mason Lumber Company, D.S. Swain Gas and retired from Beaufort County Schools in June of 1998. On Aug. 10, 1957, he married Marjorie Guthrie who preceded him in death on Dec. 13, 2009. Mr. Gurganus was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where he had been a member of the Men’s Club and a church trustee.
Survivors include two daughters, Sherrie Watkins and husband Les of Raleigh, Tammy Rae Waters and Sput Anderson of Washington, grandchildren, Tyler Watkins and wife Adrianne, Trey Watkins, Camryn Watkins, great-grandchildren, MaKenzie Victoria Watkins and Kolton Reid Watkins, two brothers, David Gurganus Jr. of Greenville, Russell Gurganus of Washington and sister, Margaret Woolard. He was preceded in death by twin sons, Joseph Edmund Gurganus, Dalton Jay Gurganus, three brothers, Willard Gurganus, Dewey Gurganus, Joe Gurganus and three sisters, Carrie Mae Hudnell, Mabel Gurganus and Mary Weathersby.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home.
