Blooming beauties at Pocosin Lakes

Over the past month on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, wild iris have been in bloom. This is a native iris (Iris virginica) that only grows in wetlands from New York to Florida to Louisiana to Minnesota. Most iris species used in yards and adapted to well-drained soils are from Asia. There is also a non-native yellow iris (pale yellow iris, Iris pseudacorus) that does occur in wetlands and in the area around the Scuppernong River.
