- HOME FREE: Efigenio and Izabeth Pelagio recently met with Habitat for Humanity of Beaufort County treasurer Tom Molon to finalize the payment in full of the couple’s home built by the organization. (Habitat for Humanity)
Habitat for Humanity is looking for new volunteers to both build and advise.
The Beaufort County chapter of the organization that builds affordable housing for clients is seeking board members and those willing to swing a hammer.
“This is an all-volunteer organization,” said publicity chairman Rudy Burns.
The organization builds one house a year and has the next site picked out on Boston Avenue in Washington. Burns said they hope to get started in the next few weeks.
Habitat for Humanity has many successes in Beaufort County, including a recent mortgage paid in full by Efigenio and Izabeth Pelagio, according to Burns. On May 5, the couple paid off the mortgage on their Walker Avenue home, in time to clear the slate before Efigenio Pelagio’s coming retirement in September.
Burns said the organization hopes to add board members with unique skillsets that can help the local chapter expand: attorneys and those familiar with grant writing would be especially helpful.
As for building volunteers, Burns said the requirement is really quite simple: “They have to be able to use a hammer, really, and be able to follow instructions. We’ll have a builder on site.
