Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Cox Williams, age 94, a resident of North Market Street, Washington, died Monday, June 5, 2017 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM Saturday in the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory, conducted by Rev. Ken Hall. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington.

Mrs. Williams was born in Beaufort County on October 15, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Hertford Anson Cox and Eula Ann Stubbs Cox. Mrs. Williams graduated from Chocowinity High School.

She worked at the Garment Factory, Hamilton Beach, Washington Senior Center, and retired as an operator with Carolina Telephone and Telegraph. Mrs. Williams was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Williams participated in the Senior Olympic Games for many years. She was a member of the 1980 Senior Olympics Women’s Basketball team. In her spare time, Mrs. Williams loved to bowl, tending to her flower garden and taking care of her cat, Tiger.

On November 1, 1949, she married David Daniel “Dan” Williams, who preceded her in death, June 1, 1971.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Williams Fraley and husband, Freelen of Pollocksville; her son, Michael Lee Williams and his significant other, Marguerite Dickerson of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren, Crystal Ann Fraley (Johnny Avery), David Daniel Fraley (Gayle); and two great-grandchildren, Brianna Avery and Aliviah Fraley.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Ann Williams and a sister, Myra Matkins.

The family would like to thank Mrs. Williams’ caregivers, Lina Harris and Della Myers, for their care and compassion.
