Hubert H. Watson Jr.

Mr. Hubert Herman Watson Jr., age 92, a resident of 7067 Beech Ridge Road, Belhaven, died Monday, August 14, 2017 at his home.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at West Belhaven Church of Christ, officiated by James Scheffler. Burial will follow in Belhaven Community Cemetery. His grandsons and great-grandsons, Brian Gibbs, Kevin Gibbs, Erick Jennings, Jon Michael Gibbs, Lantz Jennings, Neal Gibbs, Cody Gibbs and Chase Jefferson will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. Watson was born in Beaufort County on August 20, 1924, son of the late Hubert Herman Watson Sr. and Sallie Estelle Respess Watson. He served his country in the US Navy during World War II. On December 15, 1949, he married the former Clara Allen who preceded him in death on June 12, 2002. Mr. Watson was a salesman for Agri-Chemicals. He scouted crops, raised feeder pigs and planted strawberries. He loved to garden, woodworking and coached Pony League and Little League baseball. Mr. Watson was a member of the American Legion, Toastmasters, NC Right to Life and NC Strawberry Association. He was a member of West Belhaven Church of Christ and a past member of the choir.

He is survived by his children: Hubert “Hugh” Watson III and wife Barbara of Swan Quarter, Gail Gibbs and husband Larry of Belhaven, Karen Carawan and husband Steve of Belhaven; six grandchildren: Brian Gibbs, Kevin Gibbs, Jon Michael Gibbs, Michelle Jefferson, Erick Jennings and Lantz Jennings; his stepdaughter: Heather Stuart; 14 great-grandchildren and his sister: Peggy Rose of Windmill Point, Belhaven.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by three sisters: Virginia Cox, Drucilla Kilpatrick and Ann Boyd.

The family will receive friends 1:30-3:00 PM prior to the service on Thursday in the Fellowship Hall at West Belhaven Church of Christ and other times at the home of his daughter, located at 7109 Beech Ridge Road.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to West Belhaven Church of Christ Building Fund, 1080 W. Main Street, Belhaven, NC 27810.
