The Fairfield Bridge on N.C. Highway 94 in Hyde County is an S-shaped structure with 65 feet vertical clearance for vessels using the 22-mile Alligator-Pungo Canal, part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The $15 million bridge was paid for by the U.S. Government and donated to the State of North Carolina. It replaced a drawbridge maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
