Authorities responded to a school bus crash around 2 p.m. Thursday on U.S. Highway 264/John Small Avenue near Frank’s Pizza.
A large gray truck rear-ended school bus No. 268, causing it to then rear-end another truck in front, according to Beaufort County Schools Transportation Director Jerry Wynne. No one was injured, and there were no children on the bus, only the driver.
Wynne said the bus is used for maintenance purposes, not transporting students. The school bus suffered minor damage to the back, but the two trucks sustained more serious damage in the pile-up.
The driver of the gray truck, Loralyn Moore, said she didn’t see the school bus braking in front of her at first and was unable to stop in time before hitting the bus. The front of her truck was partially underneath the bus.
Moore said she wasn’t aware of the other truck in front until after everyone got out of their vehicles.
Wynne said the situation was likely due to a case of backed-up traffic as the road switches to a two-lane road. Vehicles can pack in tight in that area, especially with a red light, he added.
An officer with the Washington Police Department said charges are pending, as the investigation is ongoing.
