Phillip Milburn Black

Mr. Phillip Milburn Black, age 76, a resident of Black Road, Washington, died Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital. Phil was born May 8, 1941 to the late Mattie Woolard Black and Milburn Black in Beaufort County, NC. On July 28, 1960 he married the former Peggy Woolard who preceded him in death in 2008. Phil was born and raised in the Broad Creek Community of Beaufort County, a life-long farmer, and a member of the Beaufort County Sheriff Auxiliary for 31 years. He was a member of Beaver Dam Church of Christ and was a loving father and grandfather. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by three brothers: Gerald, Cedric and Wayland Black. Survivors include two daughters: Tammy Boyd and husband Douglas of Pinetown, and Tracey Respess and husband Jesse of Washington; five grandchildren: Justin Douglas Boyd, Garrett Lynn Boyd and Sarabeth Black Boyd, all of Pinetown, Riley Paige Respess and Emily Kate Respess of Washington; one brother, Frankie Black and wife Peggy of Washington; and three sisters-in-law: Peggy Black (Gerald), Barbara Black (Cedric) and JoAnn Black (Wayland). A celebration of Phil’s life will be held 11:30 am, Wednesday, November 22, 2017 in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service with Pastor Steve Hill officiating. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. The following will serve as pallbearers: Mark Black, Wayne Black, Taylor Black, Justin Boyd, Garrett Boyd and Joe Hope. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Hillside Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Boy Scout Troop 258 or Broad Creek EMS, 7214 Broad Creek Road, Washington. Hillside Funeral Service & Cremations, 4500 Hwy 264 East, Washington, has been given the honor of being entrusted with serving the Black family.
