Margaret “Meme” B. Cordon

Mrs. Margaret “Meme” Virginia Best Cordon, age 88, a resident of Belhaven, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, at her home around family and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017, at Sidney Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery and will be officiated by Pastor Walter Taylor. Vince Smith, Henry Tooley, Zack Weldon, George Elliott and Lee Beacham will serve as pallbearers. Sammy Wilkinson, Tracy Logan, Lawrence Rowe, Rodney Cordon and Howie Selby will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Mrs. Cordon was born in Middleton, New Jersey, on Feb. 26, 1929, to the late George Best and Mary Lena Gysie Best. On Jan. 16, 1948, she married George Carnie Cordon, Sr. who preceded her in death July 5, 1979. She earned her nursing degree from Beaufort County Community College. Mrs. Cordon worked for Britthaven and for Pungo District Hospital. She was a member of St. Clair’s Church of Christ.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Lee Cordon, Carnie Lynn Cordon, both of Belhaven, a son, Stephen Warren Cordon, Sr., of Belhaven, three grandchildren, Stephen Warren Cordon, Jr., Lisa Marie Cordon, Lora Lee Rowe Beacham and 12 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by a son, George Carnie Cordon, Jr., three brothers and two sisters.

The family will receive friends following the service at the home.
