Mrs. Bessie Joyce Waters Cutler, age 82, a former resident of Pinetown, passed away Friday, Feb. 2, 2018, at Barbour Court Nursing Center of Smithfield.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington, officiated by Eddie Gurganus. Burial will follow in Yeatesville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Larry Jones, Sr., Larry Jones, Jr., Paul Carrow, Ken Braddy, James Braddy and Joe Digges.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2018, at Paul Funeral Home of Washington.

Mrs. Cutler was born in Beaufort County on July 22, 1935, daughter of the late LeRoy Clayton Waters, Sr. and the late Vera Sophie Smith Waters. She was a graduate of Bath High School and later worked at National Spinning of Washington. On Nov. 22, 1954, she married James Theodore Cutler, Sr. who preceded her in death on April 9, 1976. Mrs. Cutler was a member of Woodard’s Pond Church of Christ. She loved her church family and loved to garden, make quilts, do crafts and cook. Mrs. Cutler also loved cats and rescued them when she knew they were stray. She had served on the Yeatesville Cemetery Board.

Survivors include three daughters, Deborah C. Lands and husband Danny, of Danville, Virginia, Marlene C. Rue, of Willow Spring, and Arlene S. Cutler, of Buies Creek; a son, James T. Cutler, Jr., of Belhaven; a sister, Faye Davis and husband Lloyd, of Pantego; a brother, L.C. Waters and wife Faye, of Pantego; three grandchildren, Katie Lands, Clint Brandon Rue and Samantha C. Jackson; and two great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Cutler and Shelby Barfield. Mrs. Cutler is preceded in death along with her parents and husband by a son, James T. Cutler, Jr.; a grandson, Danny Lands, Jr.; a son-in-law, Hal Rue; and two sisters, Mildred McCarthy and Cora Mae Gaylord.
