Black bears use their claws for a variety of reasons. Their claws are great for climbing, sometimes used when threatened and sometimes used to reach tender buds to eat. Black bears use their claws to scratch bark off some trees to eat the sapwood. And, sometimes they use their claws to scratch trees to mark their territory. Pictured Black bear is on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.
