Douglas “Doug” Bright

Mr. Douglas Elliott Bright, age 74, a resident of 189 Edwards Drive, Belhaven, died Sunday Feb. 11, 2018, at his home.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018, at First Christian Church of Belhaven, officiated by Reverend Dr. Harold Green and Rev. Stanley Allen. Burial will follow in Yeatesville Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Doug Dixon, Jody Bell, Michael Marslender, Georgie Baker, George Keech, Graham Tunstall, Buddy Shavender, Bryant Baker, Rex Harris, Reeves “Owen” Smith and Charlie Clark.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. until the funeral hour on Wednesday at the church and at other times at the home.

Mr. Doug was born in Pasquotank County on Dec. 11, 1943, son of the late Elliott Hollowell Bright and the late Grace Mae Taylor Bright. He was a 1962 graduate of Central High School in Elizabeth City and completed his associates degree from N.C State University. On June 29, 1969, he married the former Virginia “Jenny” Lee Edwards, who survives. Doug was a member of Belhaven Masonic Lodge 509 AFAM and a member of First Christian Church of Belhaven. In his church affiliation he was an Elder, former chairman of the board, former Sunday school teacher and former youth leader.

Surviving along with his wife, Jenny, of the home, are four daughters, Melody Bright Bell and husband Jody, of Gilbertown, Alabama, Jill Bright Vernelson and husband Phil, of New Bern, LeAnn Bright Dixon and husband Doug, of Pinetown, and Jennifer Marslender and husband Michael, of Belhaven; a brother, Clark Bright and wife Beth, of Bath; six grandchildren, Megan and Hunter Bell, Douglas and Abigail Dixon and Justin and Matthew Marslender; and numerous special nieces and nephews. Mr. Doug was predeceased along with his parents by a granddaughter, Annabelle Dixon, and a brother, Scott Bright.

In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks for memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834 or to the charity of one’s choice.
