Lucy M. Alligood

Mrs. Lucy Mae Mills Alligood, age 99, a former resident of East Eighth Street, Washington, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, at River Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Washington.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, conducted by Dr. Greg Barmer.

The following will serve as pallbearers: Matthew Lambert, Zachary Woolard, Nathaniel Woolard, Jason Berry, Timothy Lurvey and William Lurvey.

Mrs. Alligood was born in Beaufort County on April 14, 1918. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Cleveland Mills and Lucy Mae Smith Mills. Mrs. Alligood graduated from Grimesland High School. She worked as a sales person at Woolsworth and Buckman’s. She also managed The Thrift Shop for several years. Mrs. Alligood owned and operated Lucy’s Children’s and Ladies’ Wear from 1963 until her retirement in 1975.

Mrs. Alligood was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Blanche Elks (now Unity) Sunday School Class and Group No. 2. She was a very active member in the Beaufort County Blind Center, where she had served as vice-president.

On Dec. 2, 1950, she married Bardon Farrow Alligood, who preceded her in death in January 1997.

Mrs. Alligood is survived by two daughters, Miriam A. Lambert and husband Richard L. Lambert, of Angier, N.C., Almeta A. Woolard and husband F. Steve Woolard, of Washington; five grandchildren, Matthew Lambert, Amanda Lambert, Zachary Woolard, Nathaniel Woolard and Susannah Woolard Berry; three great-grandchildren, Gretchen Berry, Finner Woolard, Grace Lambert and a Baby Boy Woolard due April 11, 2018. She also survived by brother-in-law Joseph Whitley, sister-in-law Mary W. Mills, along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Alligood was preceded in death by five brothers, Melvin Mills, Dumay Mills, Josh Mills, Plum Mills and Elmer Mills, and a sister, Betsy Mills Whitley.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and other times at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Almeta and Steve Woolard, 398 N.C. Highway 171 North, Washington.
