Robert Eugene Sandy

Dr. Robert Eugene Sandy, at 90 years old, passed away peacefully in his home on Feb. 20, 2018.

He was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, to the late Rose A. Furin and Joseph A. Sandy. He was predeceased by his wife, Maxine Curry Sandy, and brothers, Ernest J. Sandy and Joseph F. Sandy. He graduated from Penn State University in 1949 and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1953. He completed his residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. After serving two years as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy, he moved to Washington, to work as a radiologist with the Beaufort County Hospital.

Dr. Sandy was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and an elder. He also served as chairman of the Beaufort County Department of Social Services and president of both the Pamlico-Albemarle Medical Society and the Beaufort County Hospital Medical Staff.

Dr. Sandy is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Sandy Warner and husband Harvey; sons, Robert E. Sandy II and wife Tina; Joseph A. Sandy and wife Sally; grandchildren, Lauren, Anna, Timothy, Hannah, Robert III, Joey and Patrick; great-granddaughter, Caroline; sister, Betty Jane Sandy Watson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dr. Sandy’s funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at the Oakdale Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Hillside Funeral Home on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
