Shelby Jean Waters, 81, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2018.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 2:30 PM in Pinewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 1 to 2 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home.

Shelby was a native of Pitt County but has resided in Beaufort County since the mid 1960’s. She attended Belvoir Falkland schools and received nurse training at the Wilson School of Nursing, graduating in 1957. She worked as a Registered Nurse at the Wilson Clinic and then went on to attend the Anesthesia School at Norfolk General Hospital. She was employed as a Nurse Anesthetist at Beaufort County Hospital from 1960 until her retirement. Shelby was a member of Mount Pleasant Christian Church and attended as long as she was able. She also loved to travel. She had visited 49 of the 50 states and kept detailed notebooks with brochures from all the places she had visited.

Shelby was preceded in death by her parents, Joshua Read and Mattie Waters, and sister, Joyce Waters Benton.

She is survived by her sister, Marie Hilliard of Greenville; brothers, J.R. Waters, Jr. and wife, Virginia, of Fort Worth, TX, and Bobby Eugene Waters and wife, Brenda, of Greenville; nieces and nephews, Jean Gibby and husband, Jerry, of Wake Forest, Cathy Deal and husband, Brian, of Blount’s Creek, Joshua Waters, III of Fort Worth, TX, Jacob Waters of Federal Way, WA, and Jessica Waters of Kent, WA; special cousin, Sheila Whitehurst-Davis of Greenville; 5 great-nephews; and numerous other cousins.
