Law enforcement activity up in Columbia in March

Tyrrell sheriff’s deputies responded to 689 law enforcement calls or complaints inside Columbia during March, Sgt. Raymond Allen reported April 3 to the board of aldermen.
The January and February call volumes were 467 and 480, respectively.
There were 18 ambulance and three fire calls in Columbia in March.
The bulk of the law calls were business checks (378) in which a deputy visited a business location after business hours and observed the premises.
There were 65 traffic stops, 62 security checks, 20 inmate transports, 16 conversations with persons, 15 assists to other agencies, 14 court papers served, and 13 criminal investigations.
Officers also responded to an assault in progress, assisted two motorists, three careless and reckless drivers, three civil disputes, six disputes in progress, four domestics in progress, eight escorts, five frauds, one holdup, nine burglar alarms, a larceny in progress, served seven warrants, three suspicious persons in progress, one suspicious person (prior), suspicious vehicle, trespassing, two unconscious persons, six vehicle unlocks, and one check of a person’s welfare.
Officers issed 21 citations.
In the northwest sector of the town, as defined by Scuppernong Drive and Broad Street, two investigation were conducted and 10 citations issued.
In the northeast there were three investigations, seven citations issued, one criminal summons served for failure to return rental property, one order for arrest for probation violation third time, and one warrant served for possession of Schedule II and III substances and possession of drug paraphernalia.
In the southwest corner one citation was issued, one criminal summons served for larceny, one order for arrest served for child support order violation, two on-view arrests for failure to appear and for misdemeanor marijuana possession, and two warrants served for (1) indecent liberties with a child and misdemeanor child abuse, and (2) simple assault.
In the southeast section there was one investigation and three citations issued.
Arrests made at the sheriff’s office were an order for arrest for failure to appear and for assault on a female, and a warrant served for possession of controlled substance on prison or jail premises.
The two deputies assigned to the town drove 2,019 miles during March.
