RIVER’S BOUNTY: Approximately 20 volunteers took to the Pamlico River on Saturday to participate in Sound River’s annual river cleanup. Volunteers worked in Broad Creek, Runyon Creek, the Pamlico River along the waterfront, Castle Island and Tranter’s Creek. Together, the group filled the dumpster pictured 2/3 full. Interesting items included two $1 bills, a purple martin house, tires and several buckets. The majority of trash was plastic and styrofoam. The youngest volunteers were five years old, and simultaneous litter pickups occurred in New Bern, Greenville, Tarboro and Rocky Mount on the same day.
