Miss Frances Douglas, age 87, a resident of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and a former resident of Washington, died Wednesday, May 9, 2018.

A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Zion Episcopal Church of Washington and will be officiated by Rev. Sarah Saxe. Burial will follow in the church cemetery and a reception in Douglas Hall at the church will follow the burial. Scott Douglas, Keith Douglas, Joshua Boyd, Larry Fordham, William Rhodes and Jim Albera will serve as pallbearers.

Miss Douglas was born in Beaufort County on Oct. 13, 1930, to the late James Edgar Douglas and Olive Cutler Douglas. She was a 1948 graduate of Bath High School. She received her Bachelor of Science in Health and Human Performance in 1952 then went on to complete her Master’s Degree in Art and Education in 1965. Miss Douglas was a lifelong educator in the NC Public School System teaching in Bath, Aurora and Jacksonville. She was an Associate Professor at East Carolina University for over 25 years until her retirement. She remained an Associate Professor Emerita. Miss Douglas believed in helping others and she volunteered in organizations such as the Girl Scouts, Eagle’s Wings and even Bunyan Fire Department. She bled purple and gold and was a member of the ECU and Beaufort County Pirate Fan Clubs. Miss Douglas was a life member at Zion Episcopal Church of Washington where she was a lay reader.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews and is preceded in death by her brother, Harry N. Douglas, and her sister, Jean Douglas Fordham.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Regency Hospice of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, her nurse, Nancy Whitehurst, her CNA Melody Potter, and her other caregivers, Alyse Emerson, Denise Ward, Trish Jennings and Kimberly Lee.
