Glossy Ibis on the Refuge

Occasionally seen on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) is a darkly feathered, long-legged wading bird. With their long-curved bill, they probe in the water & soft mud of marshes, shallow ponds & flooded fields for crayfish, insects, crabs, worms, frogs, snails & small fish. Pictured bird was photographed at Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge.
