Summer enrichment classes offer fun and skills for youth

Summer Enrichment Classes for Kids is a series of fun and educational programs that will get them moving and thinking. Beaufort County Community College offers this opportunity for youth to sample careers, hobbies and skillsets.
Cake Decorating (for ages 10 and up)
Beautifully decorated cakes, cookies and cupcakes are always more delicious. Maria Dickinson will show youth how to work with colorful icing to make delightfully decorated baked goods. Students will practice creativity and precision and make treats to carry home to their families. A supply list is available upon registration. Parents should provide an email address to receive the list. The class costs $30 and takes place on Monday and Tuesday, June 18-19 from 9:00 a.m-12:00 p.m. in Building 8 on BCCC’s campus.
Theater Magic (for rising 5th to 8th graders)
This class is held on the stage so that budding thespians can experience the joy and fun of performing. They will spend four days learning about acting, improv and stage movement. They will learn technical skills that support the production of a play and practice storytelling. Youth will spend time producing props, puppets and stage makeup. In the last session, the class will have a performance so that all participants can be stars! All supplies are included. This class runs from June 18-21,Monday through Thursday from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. It costs $50 and takes place in the Building 8 Auditorium on BCCC’s campus.
Painting Fun (for grades 1-5)
Children will exercise creativity as they apply bright acrylic paints to stretch canvases. They can feel pride in the picture they make and carry the skill of painting home to enjoy anytime. The class provides all the supplies. Students are advised to wear appropriate clothes for painting. Kathy Barthel at the Happy Canvas teaches these classes. Several sections are offered from June 19-28, July 10-19 and July 24-August 2 at the Racquet Club of Washington. All classes run from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and they cost $55.
4-H Little Chefs Camp (for rising 1st and 2nd graders)
Erin Massie of Beaufort County 4-H is the instructor for this fun and engaging class. With her guidance, chefs will plan, measure and cook healthy meals and snacks. Fun and easy recipes will be prepared using safe and appropriate kitchen skills. Little chefs will also learn to set the table and practice good manners. This class will run from 8:30am-12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from June 26-28. The $40 class will take place at the Beaufort County Extension Office.
Decoy Painting (for ages 7-12)
Youth can paint a beautiful duck decoy that they will always be proud to display. Along the way, they will learn about that duck and how it fits in to the environment of eastern North Carolina. The East Carolina Wildfowl Guild will guide this painting workshop, and its members will explain the importance of conserving wildfowl in our area. This $15 class will take place on Wednesday, June 27 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
