The Build NC Bond Act passed first readings in the Senate and House in Raleigh last week and was referred to the Transportation Committee of each chamber.

The bill would authorize the state treasurer to issue up to $3 billion in bonds to finance capital facilities identified in the Strategic Transportation Initiative (STI) law.

But, of highest importance to Dare and Tyrrell County residents and businesses, no proceeds could be used for Statewide Mobility projects, which is the classification given to widening US 64 between Columbia and Manns Harbor and constructing a four-lane bridge over Alligator River.

Instead, the law would provide that approximately 50% of the proceeds from an issuance of Build NC Bonds may be used for Division Needs projects in accordance with the requirements of the STI law, and the remainder of the proceeds may be used for Regional Impact projects in accordance with the requirements of the STI law.
