Cattle Egrets (Bubulus ibis) are seen on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge as well as on other regional refuges. Their name refers to the fact they frequently feed near herds of livestock, deer or other large creatures, eating insects disturbed by the biggies. You’ll sometimes even see cattle egret feeding on ticks & insects while riding on the back of livestock.
