Michael E. Proctor

Michael Eugene Proctor, passed away on Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, at his home in Belhaven, surrounded by his family. He is the husband of Meredith Adkins Proctor; and the son of Christine Cole Proctor and the late Troy J. Proctor of Bryson City, North Carolina.

A celebration of life service will be held at the John A. Wilkinson Center at 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27, 2018,  and will be conducted by James Scheffler. Pall bearers will be members of the Northside High School varsity basketball team.

Visitation will be held at the West Belhaven Church of Christ on Sunday, Aug. 26, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Visitation in Bryson City will be held at Crisp Funeral Home, on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018, from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. A graveside service will follow at Lauada Cemetery.

A graduate of Swain County High School (’78), he became a die-hard Mountaineer at Appalachian State University in Boone, graduating (’83) with degrees in Health & P.E. and Criminal Justice, and a minor in psychology.  First employed by Cape Fear and Ayden-Grifton High Schools, he then accepted a position with John A. Wilkinson High School in Belhaven and transitioned into the newly constructed and consolidated Northside High School as Health & P.E. instructor and Men’s Varsity Basketball Coach. He retired this month with 35 years of service in public school secondary education.

In addition to his father, Michael was pre-deceased by his grandparents William Harvey and Minnie McClure Proctor, and John and Emeline Woody Cole. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his sons, Bryson Troy and Tucker Page Proctor; his sister, Celyn Proctor Holt, of Greensboro, her husband, Fred, and their daughters, Caitlyn and Elisabeth Holt; mother-in-law Page Worthington, of Ayden; sisters-in-law Kevin Adkins Wiley (Steve), of Pittsboro, and Deborah Adkins Huggins (Miles), of Greenville; brother-in-law Jeff Adkins (Jamie), of Dunn; and nephews Alex Huggins and Riley Adkins.

Coach Proctor and his family have been greatly appreciative of the love, support and encouragement from their church, school and community families during his long and courageous fight with brain cancer.  In lieu of flowers, Coach P and his family have suggested memorials to Northside High School Varsity Basketball, 7868 Free Union Church Rd, Pinetown, NC 27865 or  Lauada Cemetery Association, Inc., 1166 Franklin Grove Church Rd, Bryson City, NC 28713, or the charity of your choice.
