John C. Hooker

Mr. John Carr Hooker, age 83, a resident of South Fifth Street, Aurora, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018, at his home.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018, at the Aurora United Methodist Church in Aurora, conducted by Rev. Charles Hardison. Burial will follow in High Hill Cemetery in Aurora.

The following will serve as pallbearers: Chuck Tew, Ray Tew, Tommy Tew, Jeff Tew, Sterling Hooker and Marke Hooker. Steve Hooker will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

Mr. Hooker was born in Durham on June 30, 1935. He was the son of the late William Nathaniel Hooker and Helen Thompson Hooker. Mr. Hooker was a retired farmer and entrepreneur. Over his career, Mr. Hooker started several businesses in the Aurora area.

Mr. Hooker was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church. He was a Shriner and had a received his 50-year pin from the Aurora Masonic Lodge #300. Mr. Hooker was a former member of the Aurora Fire Department, where he had served as president, and a former Jaycee. In his spare time, he was an avid fisherman and hunter, loved to travel, tell stories and build things.

On Sept. 6, 1952, Mr. Hooker married the former Lillian Vendrick, who survives.

Mr. Hooker is survived by four children, William Nathaniel “Bill” Hooker II, of Aurora, John Carr “Johnny” Hooker, Jr. (Bonita), of Chocowinity, Nancy Hooker, of Aurora, Joseph Lee “Joe” Hooker (Kathy), of Aurora; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Harriette Hooker Tew, of Thomasville; brother, Winston “Wink” Hooker (Judy), of Cary, and sister-in-law Lydia Pond, of Raleigh.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hooker was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Hooker and Baby Hooker.
