John Shields Harvey Jr., 80, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018.

Born on Oct. 22, 1937, Shields was raised in Durham, North Carolina, as the only child of the late John Shields Harvey and Parthenia Frances Henry Harvey.

His college days at Hampton Sydney were interrupted by serving in the U.S. Army for two years; after an honorable discharge from the military, Shields later enrolled in Elon College as a business major. Shields’s after-college business career spanned over 44 years. He was an admired, successful businessman serving in a variety of positions and organizations with the Coca-Cola soft drink, potato chip manufacturing/distribution and vending/food services industries.

A lover of life, Shields was an avid traveler and enjoyed experiencing other cultures; a seeker and partaker of good food and drink; a fan of traditional jazz music; and an advocate of living life to its fullest. Shields will be greatly missed by all whose life he touched.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sandra Harvey, of Raleigh; stepchildren Linda Saah, of Raleigh, and Kent Fogelson and wife Lisa Fogelson, of Daytona Beach, Florida; grandchildren, Orion Saah, Layla Saah, David Shapiro and Eric Shapiro, of Raleigh, and Amanda Corbett of Middlesex, North Carolina; and great-grandchildren, Dominic Shapiro and Anthony Shapiro, of Raleigh, and Molly Corbett and Kendall Corbett, of Middlesex.
