Robert O’Neal Lewis, Sr.

Mr. Robert O’Neal Lewis, Sr. (Bobby), 82, of Havelock, passed away in his sleep and went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sept. 13, 2018.

Bobby was born in Edward, and grew up in Havelock where he met his wife, Shelby. They were married at First Baptist Church of Havelock on Aug. 5, 1959. After his enlistment with the Army, Bobby and Shelby returned home to Havelock and were faithful members of their church were they also taught Sunday school. They both enjoyed long careers with the DOD at Cherry Point MCAS. Bobby was an active member of his community; he was a 32nd Degree Past Master with the Masonic Lodge 688 and past president of the Lions Club. Bobby especially enjoyed weekends at the beach and river with his family where they gathered for fishing and relaxation. They raised their two sons, Bob and Mike, in Havelock prior to their retirement in New Bern. He and his brother Lyle then operated Lewis Bros Construction, where they applied their craftsmanship to remodeling projects in the Havelock area, including an extensive remodel of their church.

Bobby is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shelby Jane Lewis (Padrick); his sons, Robert and wife Amy, of Santa Barbara, California, and Michael and wife Patti, of New Bern; grandchildren, Matthew, David, Hannah, Maggie and Michael; and his brother Lyle and wife Peggy, of New Bern; niece Brenda and nephew Cliff.

The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff for their wonderful and sincere palliative care from Courtyards at Berne Village, Pruitt Hospice and earlier caregivers Saletha Fonville and Lynn Croom.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Sept. 27, at Pollock-Best funeral home from 2 to 3 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m. The service will be led by Rev. Dr. Don Hadley of First Baptist Church of Havelock. Masonic Rites will follow, provided by Cherry Point Lodge #688. Burial will be private.
