WALK THIS WAY: Dr. Qun Lu, (right), director of East Carolina University’s Wooten Laboratory, receives $10,000 from Alzheimer’s North Carolina’s former executive director Vivien Green for Alzheimer’s research. These funds were raised through the 2017 Washington Alzheimer’s Walk and Education Fair. Dr. Mark Notestine, president, Medical & Health Sciences Foundation, and Dr. Russ Price, associate dean for research and graduate studies at ECU (back left) join the presentation. Emily Albera (co-chair of Washington’s Walk), Gabe and Mary Ellen Foreman (front left) had family members affected by Alzheimer’s disease. In memory of his grandmother and to help find a cure, Gabe made and sold bracelets, raising $1,140 for research, a donation matched by Dr. Lu and his wife. Since 2010, AlzNC and the Washington Walk have donated $121,000 to assist ECU’s Wooten Lab research. However, the AlzNC and the Walk also provide respite and education for eastern North Carolina families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The 2018 Alzheimer’s Walk and Education Fair will be held Oct. 6 at the First Baptist Church in Washington, from 9 a.m. to noon. Anyone interested in the event may call 252-944-3446 or go online www.dementianc.org/washingtonwalk2018.
