The Salvation Army of Washington is registering children for its annual Angel Tree program in Beaufort County from Oct. 9 to Oct. 11.
The Angel Tree program, which provides new clothing and toys for children from low-income families, is for children ages birth to 12 years old. To register, applicants are asked to provide the following documents:
- Valid ID for applicant
- Verification of current address
- Verification of income or benefits
- Proof of age for children
Each family registered for the program is screened through a process that helps verify their needs.
Registration times for Beaufort County families will be from 9 a.m. through noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. at The Salvation Army, 112 E. 7th Street, Washington. In Martin and Bertie Counties registration will be on Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. to noon at 205 North Main Street, Williamston. Registration for Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties will be on Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Plymouth Church of The Nazarene, located at 104 Oakford Avenue, Plymouth.
Once a child has been registered as an “Angel,” The Salvation Army makes a promise to provide Christmas for that child. The “Angels” are placed around town for generous individuals, companies, churches, and other organizations to purchase gifts. Through Angel Tree, thousands of local children will find gifts waiting under their Christmas trees.
Angel Trees will be around the community from Nov. 5 until Dec. 1. On each tree are printed angels that have the name, age, and gift suggestions for a child “angel” registered in the program. Each angel is ready for members of the community to “adopt” (purchase gifts) for Christmas. Businesses and community organizations that would like to adopt angels or volunteer for the program can call Lieutenant Teresa Bush at 252-946-2523.
