Godfrey Ave. to be repaved

Columbia aldermen on Oct. 1 took steps to repair and repave Godfrey Avenue.
The asphalt surface is to be 18 feet wide by 1,100 feet long plus a cul-de-sac at the north end at a boat basin that adjoins North Boundary Canal.
Board members expressed regret about authorizing the work without also installing curb and gutter to protect the roadway’s edges from rapid deterioration under the weight of vehicles entering and leaving the pavement.
Long-standing town policy provides that the town and adjacent property owners share equally the cost of curb and gutter installation.
In this case, GSM Properties Inc., owner of the mobile home park that is astride Godfrey Avenue, is unwilling to participate, town manager Rhett White reported.
There was no discussion of installing curb and gutter at town expense alone to protect the town’s investment in the forthcoming roadway upgrade.
