Elva Rae Moore Basnight, 87, of 280 Ramp Road, Columbia, died late Friday evening, October 12, 2018, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Tyrrell County, NC on July 12, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Sammie F. and Dorcas Reynolds Moore.  She was married to Jessie Willard Basnight who preceded her in death in 2002.

Mrs. Basnight worked for the late Mildred Walker’s Egg Grading Service in Scuppernong Community.  After that, she worked many years at Tyrrell Hardware until it closed.  She was a member of Cabin Swamp Church of Christ.

A memorial service will be held at Cabin Swamp Church of Christ on Tuesday at 2 p.m.  Greg Brookins, Minister will officiate.  Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving are a son, Jessie W. Basnight, Jr. and wife, Sandy of Shiloh, NC; a daughter, Carol B. Spruill and husband, Robert of Columbia; six grandchildren, Leslie Amyette, Susan Spruill Kelly, Dylan Spruill, Mandi Duncan, Corey Basnight, Wes Morgan and Gina Dickinson;  great-grandchildren, Logan Amyette, Nikolas Amyette, Maggie Halperin, Scott Duncan, Connor Morgan, Cade Morgan, Cameran Morgan, Janna Beth Dickinson, Cassie Dickinson and Brody Dickinson.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, James Franklin Moore.

The family will receive friends between 12:45 and 1:45 p.m. prior to the memorial service at the church and other times at the home of Carol and Robert Spruill.
