Mr. LeRoy Gerald Alons, age 83, a resident of Washington, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, at his home.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2018, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington officiated by Rev. Calvin Tuininga. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at the home.

Mr. Alons was born in O’Brien County, Iowa, on June 10, 1935, son of the late Ben and Maggie Holtrop Alons. He attended Sheldon Christian School in Sheldon, Iowa, and served his country in the U.S. Army.  On July 3, 1956, he married the former Donna Jean Dorman who preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 2018.

Mr. Alons was a self-employed farmer and enjoyed presiding over auctions as an auctioneer. He was a former member of the Pungo Ruritan Club and a member of Covenant United Reformed Church in Pantego.

Survivors include two sons: Scott Lee Alons and wife Liz, of Edenton, and Rodney Ben Alons and wife Mary, of Pantego; two daughters, Debra Ann Pope, of Greenville, and Ramona Rae Nixon and husband Tony, of Grimesland; three brothers, Dan Alons of Sanborn, Iowa, Merle Alons, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Roger Alons of Troy, Illinois; a sister, Marie Vander Green, of Sheldon, Iowa; four grandchildren, Roy Alons and wife Victoria, Ryan Alons and wife Rebecca, Amanda Robinson and husband Matt and Kristin Alons; and a great-granddaughter, Evelyn Eden Alons. Mr. Alons was predeceased, along with his wife Donna, by a brother, John Alons, and a sister, Gertrude Hoffmon.
