Vidant events offer conversation starters, reprieve for caregivers

A pair of Vidant-sponsored events will offer caregivers and families special opportunities this week. On Wednesday, representatives from Vidant Home Health and Hospice will host an event designed to start conversations about quality of life and end-of-life care. Then on Sunday, caregivers and patients can enjoy an evening of food fellowship and entertainment as the Vidant Cancer Foundation hosts its annual caregiver social.
Both events are free and registration is required for each.
THE GAME OF HELLO
It’s something we all must face eventually, but starting conversations with loved ones about quality of life and end-of-life care can be a difficult subject to breach. An event at the Grace Martin Harwell Senior Center tomorrow may help families open the door to such conversations.
From 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Vidant Home Health and Hospice will host a special session at the Senior Center during which participants will play a game called “Hello.”
Designed to prompt thoughtful, non-threatening conversations on end-of-life issues, the game offers seniors and loved ones a chance to think through scenarios they may not have considered previously.
To RSVP and participate, call the senior center at 252-975-9368.
CAREGIVER SOCIAL
Being a caregiver for a loved one can be a hard job. It can be physically demanding, mentally taxing and emotionally draining to devote oneself wholeheartedly to the care of another and everyone deserves a break from time to time.
With that in mind, the Shepard Cancer Foundation, in partnership with Arts of the Pamlico, will hold its annual Caregiver Social event at the Turnage Theatre on Sunday. From 3 to 6 p.m., patients and caregivers can enjoy an afternoon of socializing and a free movie on the big screen.
The event kicks off with a mix and mingle at 3 p.m., followed by a showing of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” on the big screen starting at 3:30 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments for the event will be provided by Carryout By Chrislyn, and popcorn and drinks will be available during the movie. Everyone is encouraged to dress in holiday attire.
While the event is free, those attending must register by Wednesday by calling 1-855-MYVIDANT (1-855-698-4326) or visiting vidanthealth.com/events.
