Larry Everette Jones, Sr., 89, of Columbia, died, Monday, January 7, 2019, at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville.
Larry was born in Gum Neck, a rural community in Tyrrell County on June 12, 1929 to the late Ashby and Isadora Swindell Jones. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Phyllis Liverman Jones.
Larry was a dedicated member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a draftsman with the Corp of Engineers in Norfolk, VA and later moved back to Tyrrell County and established the first self-service grocery store, Larry’s General Merchandise. He was an avid outdoorsman and dedicated to his community, serving as the president of the Rotary Club and as a Tyrrell County Commissioner.
Larry adored his family. In addition to his wife, surviving is one daughter, Chris J. Carson, and husband, Jacky; two sons, Larry E. “Chip” Jones Jr. & wife, Lynn and Carl E. Jones & wife, Elaine all of Columbia. His grandchildren were his heart and joy, Larry E. “Tripp” Jones, III & wife, Brooke, Hunter Jones & wife, Kerri all of Wilmington; Haley C. Whitener & husband, Travis, Brian Carson & wife, Katie, Andy Jones & wife, Brooke all of Columbia; and Megan Jones McLaughlin & husband, Scott of Zebulon; nine great-grandchildren; Larry “Cade” Jones, IV, Jaxon Riley Jones, Ella Ashby Jones, Lyla Elizabeth Jones, Dawson Andrew Jones, Jameson Crewe Jones, Lanie Estelle Jones (“Bug”), Allie Grace McLaughlin, Graham Scott McLaughlin and two sisters, Kathleen Spencer and husband, Billy of Elizabeth City and Earline J. Kemp of Norfolk, VA.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Sam Jones, Josh Jones, Claude Jones and two sisters, Elsie J. Spencer and Lillie Mae J. Cahoon.
A memorial service will be held ‪at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Rev. Ben VanStaalduinen and Rev. Edwin Smith will officiate. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
