Susan Elaine “Sue” Respess

Mrs. Susan Elaine “Sue” Hulbert Respess, age 74, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019, at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019, from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington, conducted by Billy Ray Askew and Jeff Brunsman. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington.

The following will serve as pallbearers: G.B. Bowen, Stacey Bowen, Derick Tetterton, Ashley Woolard, Fred Tetterton, Eugene Clark, Chris Kelly and Randy Sparks.

Susan Respess was born in Walton, New York, on Oct. 8, 1944. She was the daughter of the late Charles William Hulbert and Dorothy Elizabeth Seymour Hulbert. She was a 1962 graduate of Walton Central School. Sue married Murphy Boyd Respess on March 29, 1963. She was a homemaker until her children started school. She then returned to school and studied nursing at Beaufort County Community College, where she graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing in 1979. She practiced in the intensive care unit at Beaufort County Hospital for 10 years before practicing an additional 25 years at the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center until her retirement in 2013. She was a member of the Terra Ceia Church of Christ, the Ladies Aide of the church and Oncology Nursing Society. Sue had a passion for caring for people and for lifting up others with her kind and generous spirit. Working as a nurse and providing care for her patients and families brought great joy to her days. In her free time, she also enjoyed playing the piano, violin and working with flowers. Her grandchildren will always remember her for her love texts, fried pork chops and endless supply of glass bottled Coca Colas.

Sue is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Murphy Boyd Respess; their three children, Murphy Todd Respess and wife,Patricia, of Creswell, Sherri Elizabeth Crouch and husband Burleigh, of Ayden, Christopher Hulbert Respess and wife Suzanne, of Washington; grandchildren, Jessica Respess Saxton (Travis), of Goldsboro, Amanda Elizabeth Respess, of Lawrence, Kansas, Allysa Sue Respess and Murphy Noah Respess, of Smith Center, Kansas; Joseph Roland Smith III, of Pantego, Catherine Anne Kelly (Chris), Hailey Corbin Respess and Hanna Grace Respess, all of Washington; three great-grandchildren, Wyatt Murphy Saxton, Lane Lee Porter, Lakota Boyd Porter; surviving siblings, sister, Nancy Jane Constable, of Sidney Center, New York; brothers, Ronald Alton Hulbert of Walton, New York, Barry Charles Hulbert, of Beallsville, Ohio, Kevin Dale Sparling, of West Chester, Virginia, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia Anne Hulbert, Catherine Etta Hulbert; and four brothers, Carl William Hulbert, Jerald Alston Hulbert, Robert Alan Hulbert and Denman Arthur Hulbert.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and other times at her home, 5450 Old 97 Road, Pantego, 27860.
