Power outage sends darkness across Tyrrell County
A power outage on Jan. 15 plunged Columbia and Tyrrell County into darkness when the temperature was 35 degrees.
At one location west of Columbia the failure began at 12:15 a.m. and ended at 3:32 a.m. Wind was calm and sky overcast during the outage.
Users calling the Dominion Energy helpline heard a spokeswoman say the outage was “widespread” and that service should be restored between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.
Cora Argotti, Dominion Energy spokeswoman in Richmond, Va., said in late morning that 1,880 customers lost service, 1,630 were restored by 3:30 a.m and the remainder by 6:30 a.m. Jan. 15.
The outage, which was not weather related, occurred when a wire broke on a distriution pole and had to be replaced, she said.
