The Southern Albemarle Association on Jan. 17 unanimously endorsed a proposal to name the new Oregon Inlet bridge in honor of long-time former state senator Marc Basnight of Manteo.

The Roads and Bridges Committee recommended the action after learning that the Dare County Board of Commissioners is soliciting citizen input on names for the structure and may make its recommendation to the state transportation board in early February.

Attending as guests of the Jan. 17 quarterly meeting in the Vernon James Center near Plymouth were Rep. Ed Goodwin (R-Chowan) and state transportation board member Allen Moran of Manteo.

Forty-nine delegates were present. The Dare County representation consisted of Elaine Vann (county vice president), Moon Tillett, Jean Tillett, Fletchet Willey, Deen M. Tolson and David Daniels.

Moran said some traffic would be allowed on the new bridge sometime in February, and the project should be completed within another year.

The association is financed by appropriations from Beaufort, Dare, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell and Washington counties. It has promoted public transportation improvements since its organization in 1935 by D. Victor Meekins of Dare County and others.
