Shutterbugs take note — this month, the Washington Tourism Development Authority hosts its annual photo contest, and photographers will have the chance to win both cash prizes and exposure through the WTDA’s efforts to attract visitors to Washington.

“On our end, we’re looking to collect digital assets that we can use for marketing purposes, so we’re seeking tourism-worthy photos to entice visitors to come visit Washington,” WTDA Director Erin Ruyle said. “What better way to do it than to open it up to the community so they can show their Washington through their eyes?”

From now through March 22, Washington residents and visitors can submit their best images in four categories, each of which carries a cash prize. Categories include:

  • Enjoying outdoor adventures — anything to do with the outdoors in Washington. (Cash prize of $200)
  • People — Captures individuals of any age, with a focus on character, spirit and a little bit of fun. (Cash prize of $200)
  • #MyWashingtonNC — This category captures what the photographer loves best about their town and what makes Washington special to them. (Cash prize of $200)
  • Fan Favorite — All submitted photos will be uploaded to the @visitlittlewashington Facebook page within the next business day, at which point the page’s followers can vote on each. The winner will be whoever receives the most likes on their photo. (Cash prize of $100)

“We did this last fall and had some success with it,” Ruyle said. “We always try to give folks photo credit as well, so that’s kind of exciting for them to see their work with their name beside it and see the engagement and the reactions.”

The contest is open to photographers ages 18 and older. Kids and youth younger than 18 must have a parent or guardian enter the contest on their behalf. All photos must be taken in Washington. Photos will be judged on quality, composition, content, originality, creativity and mass appeal.
