Black Simmers have returned to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. These uniquely colored birds fly along the water’s surface. With lower bill in the water they snag small fish, securing the catch by snapping their top bill closed. Black Skimmers’ beach nesting habitat is disappearing as shoreline property is increasingly developed for housing and coastal activities.
