Students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill return to Tyrrell County March 10-14 to learn how people’s health is impacted by where they live, work, and play, and to help community partners build a culture of health.

The interdisciplinary team includes nursing, physical therapy and audiology students  and faculty.

Projects include working with PE teachers and their students at the elementary and middle/high school to learn healthy skills and have fun with physical fitness.

On Monday and Wednesday, March 11 and 13, participants at the Senior Center will have risk assessments, including a medication review.

A discussion about healthy aging is scheduled Tuesday, March 12, from 11 to 12 at the public library.

The group will also work with the Church Road Emergency Food Closet, distribute free healthy recipe booklets at Food Lion, mentor high school students interested in college, conduct hearing screenings, and make home visits to those interested to check for falls risk and help caregivers or residents with health concerns.

“The team looks forward to working with and learning from county residents during its tenth visit to Tyrrell County,” said Sonda Oppewal, a team leader.
