Jerry McCoy Whitley

Mr. Jerry McCoy Whitley, age 87, a resident of 1120 Cowell Farm Road, Washington, died Tuesday, March 5, 2019, at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2019, at Second Baptist Church in Washington officiated by John Koch. A private burial will take place.

The family will receive friends at 12 noon on Saturday at Second Baptist Church prior to the service.

Mr. Whitley was born in Pitt County on April 28, 1931, son of the late John McCoy Whitley and the late Lula Mae Winstead Whitley. He was a 1949 graduate of Washington High School and continued his education at the University of Georgia and Beaufort County Community College. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korea Conflict. On May 14, 1955, he married the former Dorothy Ray Clark, who preceded him in death on April 26, 2012. Mr. Whitley was a maintenance superintendent in the strip coal mine business with Consolidation Coal Company and E.I. Dupont of Baltimore, Maryland, and Texas Gulf, now Nutrien of Aurora. He was a member of Second Baptist Church of Washington.

Mr. Whitley is survived by his son, Jerry “Mac” McCoy Whitley, Jr. and wife Melinda Jane, of Nashville, Tennessee; a grandson, Casey McCoy Whitley, of Chicago, Illinois; and a sister, Sylvia Whitley Lilley, of Washington. He was predeceased, along with his wife and parents, by a brother, William Martin Whitley.
