Jean Shavender Woolard Smith, 88, of Creswell, died, Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at Vidant Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

Mrs. Jean was born in Beaufort County, May 20, 1930 to the late Redden and Alice Gray Herrington Shavender. Following the death of her first husband Mr. Mark Woolard, Sr., she married Mr. Russell “Russ” Smith who also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Jean was a member of the Scuppernong Church of Christ where she played the piano, organ and served as choir director. Her professional career was dedicated to Public Education for over 30 years with the Creswell Elementary School in Creswell, NC. She was a 1952 graduate of East Carolina College with a degree in music. Following her graduation, she taught piano and voice lessons.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 14, 2019 at the Scuppernong Church of Christ. Pastor Cleve Edwards will officiate. Burial will follow in the family plot in the church cemetery.

Surviving is a son, Mark Woolard and wife, Jackie of Wilson; a daughter, Patti W. Woodley of Belhaven; four grandchildren, Christopher Woolard (Lindsey), Jason Woolard (Teri), Lee Woodley (Nicole) and Clint Woodley (Lisa); nine great-grandchildren, Silas Woolard, Savannah Woolard, Ariel Woolard, Katie Phillips, Lydia Woolard, Dilan Woodley, Katelyn Woodley, Lea Woodley, Jackson Woodley, William Woodley and a sister, Marilynn Shavender of Virginia Beach, VA.

The Family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Scuppernong Church of Christ, Creswell.
